Bettas (pronounced BET-TAH, not Bay-tah)
are wonderful tropical fish that come from
Thailand (Siam until 1939) , thus Siamese
Fighting Fish, where the weather is hot
(80-86 degrees) and humid. These wonderful
labyrinth fish (can breathe air from the
surface) are well suited for this climate
where they live on mosquito larve
(bloodworms) and small insects. They are
very aggressive towards each other, but get
along with other peaceful community fish. I
have kept bettas (they were Siamese Fighting
Fish when I was growing up) in community
aquariums since I was about 10. I still keep
many of my bettas with other fish such as
platys, cory cats, otto cats (otocinculus
catfish), cardinal tetras, purple emperor tetras
and penguin tetras. If you do decide to keep
your betta in a community environment,
please stand by with a net as all fish have
different personalities and may not get along
well. Since bettas are tropical fish they do
need an aquarium heater to keep the water at
their preference of 78-80 degrees.
